Inclusion Doesn’t Happen in Perfect Conditions. National Inclusion Week 2026

HR Recruitment Consultants in the North East based in Durham

National Inclusion Week runs from 14 to 20 September this year, and this year’s theme from organisers Inclusive Employers is Build Trust. Navigate Change. It is a more honest theme than it might first appear.

Why this year’s theme matters

Inclusion work is facing real pressure right now. Budgets are tighter. Expectations are shifting. Scrutiny of diversity and inclusion initiatives has increased, at exactly the moment many HR and people teams are trying to keep making genuine progress. The theme is a direct response to that tension, a reminder that inclusion does not require perfect conditions to matter, it requires organisations to keep listening, adapting and acting even when things feel uncertain.

Conversations about identity, faith, gender, disability and belonging have also become more polarised across the UK more broadly. Some employees may feel directly affected by what they see and hear outside work. Others may feel genuinely unsure what they can say, worried about getting something wrong. National Inclusion Week exists partly to give organisations a proper moment to pause and decide what kind of workplace they actually want to build, rather than letting that uncertainty sit unaddressed.

You do not need to do everything, one genuine action is enough

One of the most useful pieces of guidance from the organisers this year is also the simplest. Inclusion is not achieved through a single awareness week, and you do not need to fill every day of it with activity. One good conversation, one useful piece of learning, or one practical action taken and followed through on, is a genuinely valuable place to start.

What this actually looks like in practice

For most businesses, the useful starting point is not a big event, it is an honest look at whether your existing policies hold up. Are recruitment decisions genuinely fair and consistent, or do they rely on informal judgement that nobody has ever really tested? Do people from different backgrounds actually experience the same workplace, or does that only hold true on paper? Are managers equipped to have a genuine conversation about inclusion, or just aware the topic exists?

National Inclusion Week is a good prompt to ask these questions properly, rather than treating inclusion as something reviewed once a year and left alone for the other fifty one weeks.

What this means for your business

Pick one thing, not everything. A genuine review of how recruitment decisions actually get made, a proper conversation with your management team about what inclusion means in practice, or an honest look at whether your existing policies match what actually happens day to day, any one of these done properly is worth more than a symbolic post with no follow through behind it.
